2 day Pain-free Movement courses are held around the UK and Channel Islands. If you can't see a course near you please contact us to request one.
Pain-Free Movement courses are for anyone from 14+ who experience pain or restricted movement regardless of your fitness level. There is no upper age limit. They are also for anyone who wants to learn a method for rehabilitation and improving recovery from injury that they can use for the rest of their life.
Yes. This method was devised by a Physical Therapist (physio) in the US and there is a substantial body of scientific research backing up the methods used in this course. You can find more information on the research page.
Yes. As long as you are prepared to follow a simple process and use some straightforward movements (think raising an arm or leg) then this is for you. You won't be sent home with a list of exercises to do each day, you won't need to get out of breath or sweaty, and this method works if you only use it when you need to.
Yes. This method can quickly reduce any movement restrictions you have as well as any pain, and lead to an increase in performance and faster recovery from injuries. It can also be used as a performance enhancing warmup.
You can also take the concepts and methods you have learned and incorporate them into your gym/weights workouts.
No. This is not massage, physio or any other hands-on treatment. You will be learning a set of simple movements you can use, and a process to follow, to reduce your own pain and be able to move more freely.
No. You will learn a little-known but very effective method of using simple, pain-free movements to reduce your pain and increase your ability to move freely. This method isn't known or used by most yoga or Pilates instructors.
The method taught in Pain-Free Movement courses is something that your physio, doctor, osteopath, chiropractor, massage therapist, yoga teacher or personal trainer is very unlikely to know so the chances are you have not have experienced it before. It is currently known by only a few people in the British Isles.
While we can't make guarantees that the methods taught in Pain-Free Movement courses will work for everyone, they are very effective for the majority of people. On average, participants self-report an improvement in their pain and/or ability to move of over 50% in their first self-treatment session.
The methods taught on the course often work when everything else has failed.
Traditional ways of working to improve pain or restriction in movement usually focus on just the problem area. The little-known secret taught in the Pain-Free Movement course is that it can be more effective to move another part of the body that isn't in pain to improve the problem.
It works because your whole body is connected and held together by tissue called fascia (pronounced fash-er). Fascia contains many pain receptors and is affected by injuries, postural issues, insufficient movement, overuse, tension, stress and surgery. We can use movements elsewhere to ease the fascia back into the right position and become less tense, relieving pain and increasing your freedom of movement.
We can almost always find a pain-free movement to start self-treatment with. We can even use eye movements! And if we can't, visualization can also work.
Most of the simple movements we teach can be done with nothing more than a chair. Some people might be more comfortable lying down, so feel free to bring an exercise mat if you have one. We do recommend bringing a small cushion or even two (the sort you use on your sofa) as some of the movements are easier sitting a little higher than the chairs we provide.
No. You will have information to take away with you that will remind you how to use the process you have learnt once you are at home.
Although the method you are learning is straightforward, is it very different than anything you a likely to have encountered before. We find that if a session runs longer than an hour and a half or too much is squeezed into one day, most people find it hard to take in all the new ideas we are sharing with you. Use the break to go and get lunch, take a walk, pop home or explore the surrounding area.
Sorry, no. We don't have any childcare facilities at the workshops, and we want you to be able to learn and concentrate without interruptions.
We are unable to make specific recommendations regarding your health condition. While the Pain-Free Movement method is generally very safe as the vast majority of movements only use short sets of moderate movement using parts of the body that work well and don't hurt, it is your responsibility to make sure you have checked with your health provider if you have any doubts about whether moderate exercise is safe for you, and to inform the instructor of, and refrain from doing any movements you have been advised by your doctor to avoid.
The Pain-Free Movement method can help speed recovery from injury. The vast majority of movements only use fairly gentle short sets of movement using parts of the body that work well and don't hurt, however it is your responsibility to make sure you have checked with your health provider if you have any doubts about whether moderate exercise is safe for you, and to inform the instructor of, and refrain from doing any movements you have been advised by your doctor to avoid.
Accessibility details will be provided in the description of each course and will be dependent on the venue used. Wherever possible we choose more accessible venues. If the information you need isn't there, please don't hesitate to contact us via the contact page.
